š¶ What Is a Power Chord?
A power chord ā also called a fifth chordĀ ā is a simple but powerful š two-note chord that uses just the rootĀ š„ and the fifthĀ šļø. Unlike major or minor chords š, it leaves out the third, which gives it a neutral, punchy soundĀ šŖ that works especially well with distortion š„. Thatās why itās everywhere in rock, punk, metal and more š¤šµ.
šø How to Play a Power Chord
Dani walks you through the classic way to play a power chord on the electric guitar ā”:
š Place your index fingerĀ on the fret you want on the 6th string (the thickest one) ā this is your root noteĀ šÆ.
āļø Place your ring fingerĀ two frets higher and one string down ā that's the 5th string šµ.
(Optional) š¤ Add your pinkyĀ on the same fret as your ring finger, but on the 4th string. This adds extra power š£ to the chord.
šµ Example: To play a G power chord:
āļø Index on the 3rd fret, 6th string (G)
ā Ring finger on the 5th fret, 5th string (D)
š¤ Pinky on the 5th fret, 4th string (G again)
